Even before Mongolia’s first confirmed COVID-19 case on March 10th, the Mongolian government had taken various proactive measures to prevent the pandemic outbreak, including travel restrictions for both domestic and international transport, quarantines, border closures, and public gathering bans. However, akin to every country, these necessary health measures have hit low-income families the hardest due to the economic implications of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Schools and kindergartens serve many purposes beyond education, especially for children from low-income families. School meals provide them with their daily nutritional requirements, and class time provides children with shelter and care, especially during the cold winter season. However, as a result of school closures, many children are missing their regular access to meals, which has been exacerbated by reduced family incomes. Working families who rely on 24-hour kindergartens now find themselves without alternative childcare services. Restrictions on public gatherings have also left local businesses with dwindling sales numbers.
In order to address these issues, Breathe Mongolia – Clean Air Coalition is partnering with People In Need (PIN), Namuun Children’s Foundation, the Ministry of Education of Mongolia, Mongolia Live, the Mongolian National University of Medical Science, and the Mongolian Collegiate Basketball Association to provide nutrition and hygiene kits to 250 families in need. This project is being funded by the “Clean Hands” campaign that seeks to crowd-source $40 donations for each household. Each nutrition kit includes flour (10 kg), rice (5 kg), sugar (1 kg), and sunflower oil (1L) to support a typical Mongolian diet. Each hygiene kit includes toothpaste, 4 pieces of toothbrushes, 2 bars of hand soap, 3 bars of laundry soap, disinfecting spray, and filtration masks for each member of the household. The nutritional and hygiene kits are intended to support the health and well-being of low-income families and children as Mongolia continues its efforts to control the spread of the novel coronavirus.
